Learn: Recovering the history long kept out of our history books. This project was started this project in February, 2013. Our mission is to learn, share and illuminate African American history of the Shenandoah Valley. Our history books did not tell us of the many thousands of men who walked to neighboring states to serve in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. Nor did we learn of the hundreds of men and women who lived as “Free People” prior to the Civil War.
Share: Our mission is to share this research and more. The SVBHP website is updated regularly, adding new research presentations and links to resources. We have regular talks and events at the Lucy F. Simms Center in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Check our Schedule sub-page see our upcoming events.
Illuminate: We illuminate this history through cultural programs, a speaker series and our website. Our Heritage Center opened in 2018. It has become a place to gather, share stories, history and to learn.
We are happy our totally grass roots organization continues to grow and to share our research.
