Josephine School Community Museum
Clarke County African-American Cultural Center
Josephine Street,  Berryville, VA

As you turn off Church Street onto Josephine Street you see a highway marker.  This is the Josephine Historic District.  Close to the end of the street is the Josephine School Community Museum.  It is the historic Josephine School and the Clarke County Training School high school built in 1930 (possible Rosenwald school)  next door.

The museum houses a wonderful model of the neighborhood and church.  There are many tributes to the students and teachers of the school.  You can step into a late 1800's classroom and see displays of school clothes, textbooks and school photos.

You can go to their website to learn more: www.jschoolmuseum.org

Lucy F. Simms High School, Harrisonburg, Virginia

Go to omeka.jmu.edu/simms/ to learn about Celebrating Simms.  In 2016 JMU teamed up with members of the Lucy F. Simms High School community and to recover the history of Lucy F. Simms and the high school named after her.  The result is an extensive permanent exhibition at the Lucy F. Simms Center, a companion booklet and website about the school and Lucy F. Simms.  Many thanks go to Dr. Mollie Godfrey and Dr. Sean McCarthy and their students who created Celebrating Simms.
